Department Overview

The Classification and Records Department schedules, receives, and processes offenders for intake; calculates offenders’ time; classifies and assigns offenders to their custodies and units; places detainers; facilitates offender transfers and releases; and initiates Sex Offender registration. The department uses a rational, objective classification tool to systematically group offenders with respect to security, medical, treatment and program needs. The Classification and Records Department serves as the principal repository for the agency’s offender records, and provides oversight, training, and technical support for all unit-based classification, countroom, and intake functions and staff.

The assistant director for Classification and Records supervises the management of:

  • Classification Records Office
  • State Classification Committee
  • Unit Classification Operations
  • Intake Operations

The assistant director for Classification and Records also supervises the management of budgetary and human resources staff related to the Classification and Records Department and is responsible for the overall management and application of all TDCJ classification plans, policies, and procedures.
