Security Operations

The mission of the Security Operations Department is to provide technical assistance and operational support to CID administration and correctional facilities in the areas of staffing, video surveillance, video equipment/production, armory, research and technology, budget, security review, along with field and canine operations.

The Staffing Section is responsible for analyzing, developing, and maintaining security staffing documents for all units and conducting unit specific staffing evaluations.

The Video Surveillance and Video Equipment/Production Section assists in maintaining and repairing existing surveillance systems, as well as providing technical evaluation for augmentation and improvements.

The Armory Section manages all use of force equipment for the TDCJ.

The Research and Technology Section is responsible for testing and evaluating security equipment and providing technical assistance.

The Budget Section monitors expenditures for budgeted programs, audits, and prepares financial documents, reports, and budget requests and reports.

The Security Review Section performs reviews that monitor unit adherence to policy, and provides agency leadership with trend analysis and information to enhance security operations system-wide.

The Field Operations Section provides monitoring, training, and technical support to the field force staff.

The Canine Coordinator provides training and technical advice to kennel staff and gathers and tracks data about the program. There are a total of 88 kennel programs state wide. These kennel programs are represented in all regions of CID. There are 33 pack dog programs, 24 scent dog programs, 2 cadaver dog programs, 23 unit based cellphone/narcotic dog programs, and 6 additional regional office based narcotic programs. Tracking canines are a key resource used by security staff during escapes and are also used to assist local law enforcement agencies. Each region has a kennel with canines capable of detecting controlled substances and cell phones, with this program expanding to include facility based narcotic and cellphone canines as well.
